Fatty liver and metabolic health
Can weight-loss treatment help with fatty liver disease?
The study subjects already had steatohepatitis and fibrosis, and the results cannot be directly applied to all patients with fatty liver.
If you have fatty liver, first understand the severity and then discuss appropriate treatment; you cannot decide on medication just because you have fatty liver.
To what extent does fatty liver disease occur in the study?
ESSENCE includes people with stage 2 or 3 fibrosis who have metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) confirmed by liver biopsy. This report analyzes the results of the first 800 people treated for 72 weeks. It does not just look at whether there is fatty liver disease on ultrasound.
Liver pathological changes in some people have improved
With semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly, approximately 63% achieved resolution of steatohepatitis without worsening fibrosis, compared with approximately 34% on placebo. Fibrosis improvement without worsening steatohepatitis was also more frequent than with placebo. These outcomes were assessed by liver biopsy.
Liver section improvement, long-term results still need to be tracked
This is a trial supported by a pharmaceutical company. The current interim report mainly looks at pathological changes, and it cannot guarantee that liver failure will not occur or death will be reduced in the future. The medication group had more gastrointestinal discomfort, and as a result, it could not be directly applied to patients with simple fatty liver or cirrhosis.
You can first clarify your liver condition
If fatty liver is mentioned during the physical examination, you can return to the doctor with the report to discuss whether further evaluation of fibrosis is needed. The research results can be used as a basis for discussion, but Taiwan's approved uses, personal medical conditions and medication choices still need to be confirmed separately.
Am I at risk for inflammation or fibrosis in my fatty liver? Do you need further inspection, or should you arrange a follow-up first?
