New direction during maintenance period
Can an oral medicine help maintain weight loss after injections?
Can I take medicine to maintain my condition in the future? New research provides a direction, but it doesn't yet apply directly to everyone.
When you are close to your target weight, you can start discussing the maintenance plan; whether to change medications needs to be decided together with your doctor.
How do studies compare?
ATTAIN-MAINTAIN found 376 people who had received injections for weight loss and were randomly divided into two groups: one group took orforglipron every day, and the other group took a placebo without active pharmaceutical ingredients to see whether the subsequent weight could be maintained.
The oral medication group was better at maintaining weight
The oral medication group was better at maintaining weight loss than the placebo group. This provides a research direction for maintenance treatment, but it cannot be directly used as a personal dressing change plan.
This does not mean that oral administration is necessarily better than continued injection.
This study followed for one year, had a limited number of people, and was also supported by pharmaceutical companies. It compared oral medication to a placebo and did not directly prove that oral medication was superior to continued injections. Nor can the results be applied to other oral medications or to all people who want to stop taking injections.
When returning to the clinic, you can first discuss your actual needs
For example, if you want to reduce injections, are worried about the cost, or have side effects, you can raise your concerns. As for whether the drug under study is approved in Taiwan, whether it is available, and whether it is suitable for you, it needs to be confirmed separately. You cannot change the drug on your own just after reading the study.
I'm almost reaching my goal, what are the next steps to maintain it?
