Managing symptoms
Constipation with Mounjaro: diet changes and when to seek care
In addition to not having a bowel movement for a few days, it also depends on whether the stool is hard and whether it is difficult to defecate.
If you eat less, you may have less bowel movements. But if the stool is dry and hard, difficult to pass, or you always feel that you can't pass it cleanly, you need to deal with it.
In addition to the frequency, it also depends on the condition of the stool.
Don’t just focus on “did you go to the toilet today?” Also check to see if it is dry and hard, requires a lot of force, if there is abdominal pain and bloating, and if you can pass gas. Remember to tell your doctor about any new medicines or health products you have taken recently.
Moisture and fiber should be supplemented together
People who do not have water restrictions can drink water regularly and slowly add vegetables, fruits, oats or whole grains. If you eat a lot of fiber at once, you may feel more bloated; increase it a small amount first and observe your reaction.
When you feel the urge to defecate, don’t hold it in all the time
For example, after breakfast, let yourself relax and sit for a while, and try not to hold it in when you feel the urge to defecate. Placing a stable small stool under your feet can sometimes make your posture more comfortable, but don't sit on the toilet for a long time or exert force all the time. Moving more as your body allows can also help.
If you are still constipated after adjusting your diet, please seek medical evaluation.
A physician or pharmacist can evaluate whether stool softeners or other treatments are needed. People with poor kidney function should especially not take magnesium-containing laxatives on their own for a long time; it is also not recommended to repeatedly self-administer enemas.
When returning to the clinic, explain bowel movements and abdominal symptoms
You can write down together: the last bowel movement, how dry and hard the stool was, whether you need to strain, whether you can pass gas, and whether you have eaten or drank less recently. Bring the fiber powder, health supplements or stool softening medicines you are using so that the doctor can avoid repeated use of medicines.
Thinking back on the drinking, eating and bowel movements of the past few days and explaining them together during the follow-up visit is more helpful than just looking at the number of bowel movements.
